Description & Analysis. With a mintage totaling over 10 million coins, one would not expect the 1886-O Morgan dollar to be a rarity today. However, it does not appear that many original bags of this date survived the Pittman melting, so the only examples that are available today are those which were released at the time they were struck. 1886 MS64 NGC P-Mint Morgan Silver Dollar Own a piece of history. The availability and price spreads for the 1886-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) are very similar to the 1885-S, however the present issue is slightly scarcer and commands somewhat higher prices. The total mintage this year at the San Francisco Mint fell to 750,000 pieces.

Examples graded MS64 can be acquired for around $800 or more depending on quality. The prices for MS65 graded examples typically surpass $2,000.

The finest known 1886-S Morgan Dollars are a handful of pieces graded MS67 by the major grading services PCGS and NGC. One of the finest known examples which was pedigreed to Jack Lee sold for $27,600 at auction in January 2009.
