The obverse of this radiant coin features a depiction of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ breath-taking Walking Liberty, first introduced on the $20 gold piece in 1907. To Liberty’s left, you will find the date, with 50 stars representing the 50 states encircling her body. From 1986 to 1991, the date of issue was in Roman numerals. Since then, the coin has used Arabic numerals for the date.
The Gold American Eagle series was authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, which aimed to stake an American claim in the world’s gold bullion market and compete with popular national coins of the day, such as the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Maple Leaf.
